About
Us
The
Southern Manitoba First Nations Repatriation Program is a coordinated
effort of the Southern Manitoba First Nations communities in response
to the widespread adoption of our First Nations Children in the
sixties and seventies ('the sixties scoop'). The program seeks to
reunite adoptees with their birth families and communities.
The
Southern Manitoba First Nations Repatriation Program was developed
in February 1992, in response to the identified needs of those First
Nation members who were adopted or fostered into non-native homes,
across Canada, the USA and Europe. It is estimated that approximately
3000 Manitoba First Nations were removed into Adoption and Foster
Care from 1950 - 1980. This program is a combined effort of the
Southern First Nations Child & Family Services agencies and
First Nations Bands of Manitoba to reunite our lost generations.
The
Southern Manitoba First Nation Repatriations Program's goal is to
reunite adoptees and those in long-term foster care with birth families,
culture and community. This 'coming together' enhances the social,
emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing of the individual, the
family and the community and contributes to the long-term health
of our Manitoba First Nations.
We
provide assistance to actively search, refer, and provide birth
information and services to adoptees/ long-term foster children
and their birth families in order to begin the healing and reunification
process of the children, families and communities.
